Right now, two weeks after knee replacement, I can make it to the mailbox and back…so I am good only for moral support which you have, and along with it goes an equal amount of envy which I have….have a great walk Mike!

It ends! Busted a knee (not the one I was worried about) on the way down the first mountain. Struggled for three more days and had to make it into a section hike. The Trail will still be there for my next section hike.

Left knee went bonkers on the way down the first mountain. Made it three more days and called it a section hike. Great experience and will do more sections in the future.

Sorry to hear that Mike. Glad you got your first section though. Let me know if you’re on the AT in Western NC anytime in the future and need a hiking partner!

I’d still like to “do” the Smokies someday. I hope some shorter, lighter pack trips will strengthen my knees. Never give up!

Mike – best of luck! Hope we have a chance to meet on the trail. I leave for Georgia on Sunday.

We must have passed each other! Had to end my hike after four days of struggling with a bad knee. Popped on the way down from Springer but made it to Woody Gap before calling it for this year. More sections to come after the gimp goes away.

So sorry to hear of your bad luck!

Just remember that it’s okay to let all of the 20-somethings pass you by. They will do 20 miles a day for three days and then crash for three days. Slow and steady wins the race. Stay safe and have fun!

I need to eat “several”pounds of food before tomorrow to lighten the pack. Food in my stomach doesn’t count, right?

Your trails seem quite different to our bush walks in Oz. I’ll be interested to see how it works out.

It didn’t! Bad knee pulled me off the trail but it was fun while it lasted.

I just caught up with your next post. What bad luck! But you seem to have a good attitude about it. Hope you’re feeling better soon.

Best laid plans… Knee went bonkers on the way down the first mountain. But I’ll be back!

OMG it’s time already!!! Best of luck. If I could make it through the Maine & NH mountains to NYS on fake knees, you can make it all the way!

Nope! The knee that was supposed to be the “good” one went out on the way down Springer. But it was a good “section” hike and I’ll be back!

Mike, I’m sorry to see yo had an injury. I leave next month for the NE and then westward to Glacier NP. I’m starting with day hikes of 1-2 miles for a month or two. I will tackle the John Muir trails day hikes until its gets too cold. You get better and attack the trails when the limbs are better. 🙂
